MaxxBrass was founded in 2002 at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, originally consisting of active duty and retired military members and civilian employees of the Air Force.

For several years the group operated under auspices of the base chapel and coordinated with official military bands as well as various military and civic groups to provide music for various official and unofficial functions on and off Maxwell AFB.

Over time the group incorporated musicians from the greater Montgomery area and expanded from brass quintet to include percussion, saxophone/clarinet and vocal, and keyboard or other instruments depending on the occasion.

The group's repertoire includes classical, popular and patriotic music as well as Dixieland, swing, seasonal (Oktoberfest, Christmas), wedding music, Hispanic and jazz.
